DIY Turmeric Lime Bath Bombs

February 6, 2015 by Margaret 13 Comments

It’s been a long day, you’re ready to unwind from a stressful time at work and the only thing stopping you from a warm bath is the lack of soothing bath bombs.

Well, I’m here to say I’ve got you covered! This combo is a powerhouse of tea tree oil, lime and lavender. With the added benefit of turmeric to help even your skin tone, reduce redness and give you a boost of antioxidants!

Even if you’re not looking to totally relieve your stress, treating yourself to this soothing combination will aid in a better nights sleep – I can almost guarantee it.

(Yields 28+)

Turmeric Lime Bath Fizzies

Ingredients:
1 cup Aluminum-Free Baking Soda
1/2 cup Organic Corn Starch
1/2 cup Citric Acid
1/8 cup Turmeric, ground
2 tbsp Epsom Salt
3 tsp Organic, Virgin Coconut Oil, melted
2-3 tsp Essential Oils, I used Tea Tree Oil
1 tsp Water, added slowly (spray bottle works great for this)
1 Lime, zested
Silicon Mold, Candy Mold or Stainless Steel Mold

Directions:
Measure and whisk together all your dry ingredients.
Slowly add in your melted coconut oil + essential oils, whisk again till evenly combined.
Add in half of your lime zest, if using and then start to spritz your mixture with water.
You really don’t need to add more than 1 tsp, but using something to spray the water will allow less of a reaction and won’t ruin your mixture. Add very little at a time.
Mix together with your hands (warning – turmeric will lightly stain your hands for a day or so, use gloves if necessary), you’ll know it’s ready when you can form a clump of it together and it sticks without immediately falling apart. Be sure not to add too much water, if you’re unsure just search “bath bomb tutorial” on YouTube – so many great ones available.
Once your mixture is ready to be molded, add the remaining lime zest into each mold evenly.
Grab some of the mixture and start to pack it into each mold, pressing down as hard as you can.
Repeat till all the molds have been filled and let it rest overnight. 1-2 days is best though.
Remove each from the mold and store in an air tight container.
Enjoy with a warm bath, 1-2 should be enough to give you a peaceful scent without any staining from the turmeric.

Cost Breakdown:

Essential Oil – $8.69
Citric Acid $6.89
Baking Soda Free ($3.29)
Corn Starch $3.19
Turmeric Free ($2)
Coconut Oil – Free ($9.69)
Lime – $.50
Mineral Bath (Epsom Salt) – Free ($2.29)

Total: $19.27 – $.68 cents each

However, this amount I purchased actually was enough to make a double batch. Making these about .34 cents each. I’m sure you could make these even cheaper if you bought in bulk, waited for sales and/or already had some of these ingredients on hand, like I did. I also didn’t use up everything even after making a double batch of these bath bombs – so homemade really is more affordable if you’re an avid bath taken/LUSH addict.

I understand if you’re not comfortable with using cornstarch and/or citric acid. However please know that almost all commercial bath bombs use these ingredients. Feel free to experiment with your own combination!

Thanks so much Donna. I actually linked to where I purchased mine under the ingredients. You can find it online at Vitacost or even the bulk bins at Whole Foods. Online has more options though, I recommend Vitacost or Amazon.

As Sunday night became the wee hours of Monday morning, Michael Martin Murphey’s crooning beckoning the stress of the weekend to move on along, I discovered your email awaiting opening. Tumeric in a bath bomb? My curiosity peeked and I took a look/see and wow! Yes! We are gonna try this out ! I do think that this will be just the thing to totally dissolve away all stress! And, I did not know about Desert Essence Oils! I have been with one Essential Oil Company for 25 years. I shall give this one a go! Muy appreciation for this recipe, et al!

Just a question. Does the turmeric color goes away?

Yes, if it stains at all it will disappear on the skin. You can always reduce the amount if you’re worried about it staining your tub. It can be gently scrubbed away after draining, if it leaves behind any residue.
